FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Festival Mozaic’s 2014 WinterMezzo Weekend: Mozart, Shostakovich & Beethoven
Intimate weekend of Chamber Music features renowned chamber musicians performing in picturesque, Classic California venues

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA, OCTOBER 21, 2014–Festival Mozaic’s WinterMezzo Series kicks off November 14, 2014 with a program exploring two very different, but complementary string quartets. The popular summer music festival’s WinterMezzo series brings world-class chamber music performances throughout the year to scenic San Luis Obispo County, California.

The WinterMezzo Series brings together exceptional artists from across the country under the direction of the Festival’s music director, Scott Yoo. Mr. Yoo will perform as violinist in these programs alongside featured guest artists violinist Serena McKinney, violist Ben Ullery, and cellist Michelle Djokic. These musicians have performed on the stages of great concert halls throughout the world and have international chamber music careers. These sequential programs are designed to take the audience through a deep exploration of the works performed.

“The format of Wintermezzo allows us to explore these pieces in depth,” says Yoo. “And it gives my colleagues and me the chance to elucidate the inner workings of the music with the warm audiences of San Luis Obispo.”

WinterMezzo Weekend I – November 14-16, 2014 - features Mozart, Shostakovich and Beethoven.
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN- Duet for Two Eyeglasses Obligato, WoO 32 (viola and cello)
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART-String Quartet in D minor, K. 421
DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH – String Quartet No. 14 in F# minor, op. 142

These three works will be performed in three different events: a Notable Encounter Insight “Happy Hour” concert on Friday evening, November 14, a dinner and concert on Saturday evening, November 15 and a traditional recital on Sunday afternoon, November 16.

Western music is rich with tributes. Mozart wrote his string quartet in D minor as a tribute to Haydn, one of his six “Haydn Quartets.” And Shostakovich’s 14th string quartet was written for composer Benjamin Britten – in fact, he began writing it while staying at Britten’s home. These two meaty quartets will be supplemented by a charming Beethoven duet, pairing the lower voices of the string quartet. The series is generously sponsored by the Moca Foundation, Tablas Creek Winery, KCBX and generous contributors to the Festival Mozaic annual fund. Special thanks to dinner hosts Mike and Shirley Ritter.

In addition to the ticketed performances, Scott Yoo will also be leading a Master Class for young violinists from the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony at Cal Poly University. This event is open to the public.

Student tickets are available for $10 and a select number of free tickets will be made available for eligible students through the Passport to the Arts program, of which Festival Mozaic is a founding partner organization.

Tickets for the WinterMezzo series kickoff weekend and the entire series are available at FestivalMozaic.com. Festival Mozaic’s 2015 Summer Music Festival – the Festival’s 45th Anniversary Season- will be held from July 16-26, 2015.
