May 11 Tourism Exchange to Focus on Why Tourism Matters

WHAT: SLO CALâ€™s Tourism Exchange, on Thursday, May 11 celebrates National Travel & Tourism Week (May 7-13) and looks at why tourism matters in San Luis Obispo County.
Every second in 2016, tourists in San Luis Obispo County spent $50 at local businesses, on average, and a total of $1.53 billion dollars over the course of the year. This economic impact supports community services and employs one out of every eight people in the county. Recent numbers indicate tourism grew in San Luis Obispo County to $1.59 billion in 2016, a 10 percent increase since 2012. Local tax revenues totaled $61.7 million, which can be articulated into revenue to offset the expense of - 898 police officers; 119 miles of 2-lane roads resurfaced; 1,025 firefighters or 86 parks - services that add to residentsâ€™ safety, security and quality of life.
The $1.53 billion dollars spent by tourists was distributed across every tourism sector in San Luis Obispo County: $431 million in food and beverage sales; $415 in overnight accommodations; $265 million in retail sales; and $191 million spent on arts, entertainment and recreation.
National Travel & Tourism Week is in its 34th year and is the official salute to tourism in America. Communities nationwide will unite to showcase the impact of travel with special events and activities.
Visit SLO CALâ€™s Tourism Exchange will provide the State of County Tourism address, a keynote address from Visit California, announcement of the annual tourism awards, new educational insight sessions and a celebratory evening networking reception.

Beteta is joining San Luis Obispo County for the third year during National Travel & Tourism Week. She is regarded as one of the top tourism industry professionals in the nation and Visit San Luis Obispo County is honored to host her.
