Visit San Luis Obispo County
Celebrates Impact of Tourism on May 8 at 2 pm
Special Reception and Photo Opportunity in Pismo Beach

WHO: Visit San Luis Obispo County

WHAT: In recognition of National Travel & Tourism Week, Visit San Luis Obispo County will hold a special reception honoring the local and national impact of tourism on May 8, 2015 at 2 pm at the SeaVenture Beach Hotel in Pismo Beach. Tourism partners and elected officials from across the county will be present to raise a glass to San Luis Obispo County’s number one economic driver. A hand-crafted beach mural will be designed specifically for the event, providing a special photo opportunity for all in attendance.

Travel and tourism generates $2.1 trillion in economic output for the U.S. economy. The industry also represents one of America’s largest employers, supporting more than 15 million jobs. Every 1 in 9 jobs depend directly on the travel industry. Direct spending by domestic and international travelers in the U.S. was $927.9 billion in 2014, averaging $2.5 billion a day, $105.8 million an hour, $1.8 million a minute, and $29,398 a second. Without the tax revenue generated by the travel industry, each U.S. household would pay $1,147 more in taxes. Here in San Luis Obispo County, travel keeps local communities economically vibrant as Transient and Occupancy Tax (TOT), generated when guests stay in local lodging establishments, helps to support city and county services like fixing roads, buying fire engines, paying for law enforcement, etc.

National Travel and Tourism Week (May 2-10) is in its 32nd year and is the official salute to tourism in America. Communities nationwide will unite to showcase the impact of travel with special events and activities. In addition to the reception in Pismo Beach, Visit San Luis Obispo County will hold its annual Tourism Vision Workshop that morning at the Atascadero City Hall at 8:30 am, May 8, 2015. A special award presentation will take place honoring Pismo Beach Conference & Visitors Bureau Executive Director, Suzen Brasile with the Tourism Ambassador Award. Visit San Luis Obispo County would like to extend a special thank you to the Atascadero City Hall, the SeaVenture Beach Hotel, Martin Resorts and Earthscape Artist, Andres Amador.
