I live in the south county area so for me my 4th of July consists of camping at North Beach, riding my beach cruiser all over the place along with my son, boyfriend and two dogs. In Oceano and Grover Beach you are allowed to purchase and light off your own fireworks, so of course we spend some time there lighting off smoke bombs, piccolo petes, bloom flowers, sparklers... you name it, we do it!
Then it's off to visit friends along the way as we make our way back to Pismo Beach. Fireworks are illegal in Pismo Beach but the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce does put on a pretty amazing firework show every year. The firework show typically doesn't start until 9ish or so, but everyone claims their spot on the sand well before (so get there early if you want a good spot). Families spread out onto every inch of sand and wait patiently for the show to begin. Make sure to bring blankets, chairs and treats.
All of the fireworks are lit right on the pier so it is such a beautiful night, as I am sure you can imagine... cozied up in the sand, while the moon is shinning, the waves are calmly crashing on the shore and fireworks erupt above. It is a prefect ending to a wonderful day! Maybe I will see you there this year!
