As a child, Linda Somers-Smith never thought about long distance running, but she was intrigued by the law. "I always wanted to be a lawyer," she smiles. "Who knows, maybe it was because of Perry Mason."

While attending U.C.Davis, where she earned her law degree in 1986, Somers-Smith says, "I just started running and I was good at it." She went on to win the 1992 Chicago Marathon and compete in the Summer Olympics marathon in 1996, the year she came to San Luis Obispo County from the Bay Area.

"I wanted a place that had hills and was hot, "Somers-Smith says. "I came to train for the Olympics and never left." She continues to run several miles a day, all while practicing law at Duggan Smith Heath LLP, the firm she co-founded in 2000.

Somers-Smith, who was honored as among the region's Top 50 Women in Business in 2010, specializes in business formation and transaction law.

"There are a lot of entrepreneurs here," she explains, "and I like being part of getting a business started, making decisions that help it grow, and watching people succeed."

As for running, Somers-Smith says that even though she's slowed down a bit, she puts in her daily miles. "I like San Luis Obispo because you don't have to go anywhere to enjoy it," she laughs. "You can just run out your front door, and that's nice."
