Concerts in the Plaza - 2010 - Viper SixThis past Friday, my wife and I attended the first of this year's "Concerts in the Plaza" in downtown SLO, which is one of the first held in SLO County overall.

It turned out to be a great one. The band was "Viper Six", which I don't rememer hearing before. Turns out Viper 6 plays great 1930's and 1940's Swing Jazz music, which we happen to love. Great renditions of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and others. They did a peppy rendition of the Andrews' Sisters "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen", that had everybody hopping. I even bought their CD (just $15) we were so impressed.

The evening weather turned out to be great -this is the earliest that SLO has ever started these concerts. As usual, there was a great crowd. (Come early if you want the lawn with clear bandstand view, or to grab one of the seats provided.) At this concert, my wife and I both noticed that there were more parents than usual with young kids at the concert.

I couldn't help but remember the first time this concert was held here, way back in June 1995 when I had just moved to SLO. I swear there were only about 20 of us in the audience - tops. Now there are over 100x that number. They do sell good Firestone Beer and Edna Valley Vineyards wine, and some food is available. You can bring your own food (we do), but any alcohol must be bought on premises, and they do check. However, since we both like Edna Valley Vineyards wine, and it is reasonaly priced, that is no problem for us.

I have now updated our Free Summer Concerts webpage - feel free to check out what is available when you're in the county. (Note: Viper Six will be performing at Salisbury Vineyards in Avila Beach on June 20, with just a $5 cover charge for adults (kids are free). These concerts have already started in Arroyo Grande, Los Osos, Templeton, SLO and other places, and the remaining towns start their very concerts soon. Most end the week leading up to Labor Day.
