Calling all "birders" out there, nature photographers and those who enjoy learning about and enjoying birds in their natural environment. The 16th Annual Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival will be held January 13-16, 2012 and offers literally, over 100 seminars, walks, tours and experiences for those interested in the uncommon natural beauty and abundance of the Central Coast.

Many of the activities take place in and around Morro Bay, however there are trips out to the Carrizo National Monument, Santa Margarita Ranch, Montana de Oro and offer activities such as a "Bay Birding Cruise", kayaking, a mushroom walk, as well as bird identification activities and photography seminars galore.

Not just for adults, the event offers a special day of activities just for families - Saturday, January 14th. Family day consists of a variety of kid-friendly activities that take place at the Museum of Natural History, with field trips to the embarcadero for kayaking, and Morro Bay Community Center for Arts and Crafts. Participants can select among the menu of family day activities in which to participate - some are free others, such as the kayaking are fee-based.

Many don't know that San Luis Obispo County, and Morro Bay in particular is a winter haven for birds. Over 200 species of birds are typically sighted during the festival weekend, making for a great introduction to those just learning about birds. For those passionate about Natural History, photography and experienced ‘birders' - this is a "NOT TO MISS" event!

Check out their website for registration and a listing of open classes. While online registration closes after January 5th, I've been assured walk in registration is available starting the day of the event - starting at 6 am at the Morro Bay Community Center.
