Kyle Coots, Hospitality Manager at Sculpterra Winery
I've been taking our visiting guests to Sculpterra since I discovered the winery a year or two ago. Without meaning to be disrespectful to the artist of these behemoth sculptures that prowl the vineyard grounds, it's a bit like happening upon Disneyland in the middle of the Mojave. O.K., O.K., I'll agree the East side of Paso Robles is NOT the Mojave (though it does get pretty hot)! And, to happen upon Sculpterra with it's lush vineyards wafting over the hills, their gorgeous (and green) landscaping serving as the ‘foil' to these quite amazing and unreal sculptures is nothing short of breathless - or at least, highly unexpected!
I haven't researched the whole story of Sculpterra: the "who", "why" and "how" this place came to be - I'll leave that to you. I think one becomes overwhelmed by the setting and sculptures and frankly, decides to immerse and enjoy.
Often overlooked, particularly by us locals, is the quality of the winemaking that goes on in this oasis of art and craftsmanship. So, I send you forth with specific recommendations. First let me say, I love Reds - particularly the heady Rhone Blends for which Paso is becoming famous. With that in mind, my favorite wine recently tasted was the 2007 "Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon. I'm not a huge Cab fan, particularly of those produced in San Luis Obispo - but this one is different! In fact, my palate must not be too far off track as this wine just won a Gold Medal, Best in Class, in the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition - not too shabby! For you white wine lovers, they offer a Chardonnay and a Viognier, that, too, brought home a local medal.
Be sure to check out their website http://www.sculpterra.com as they often have entertainment on the weekends which makes the day all the more fun! And...must be the Grace of the Gods... but they're offering a special on all cases of their Cabernet (25% off!) - now, that's a good buy.
