Splash of wonder, culture drenches SLO CAL Feb. 25

Romance, betrayal, murder. A trip to the opera offers up all of life’s most poignant moments, amplified. This February 25, join Opera San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly Arts for Met Live in HD: Rusalka at the Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo’s Christopher Cohan Center.

No, you don’t have to be an “opera expert” to enjoy this whirlwind story of love, longing, rejection, and redemption unfolding right here in SLO CAL (nor do you have to dress up in your finest garb).

From the comfort of your seat, embrace natural and supernatural worlds, marvel at the lavish set and costume design and—most importantly—treat your ears to breathtaking vocal acrobatics on display. Your heartstrings will be plucked; your sense of wonder ignited.

Pronounced [Ruˈsalka], the show stars Kristine Opolais, who embodies the role that launched her international career. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “What the heck is a Rusalka, anyway?” I’d say just go to the show to find out, but I’ll throw you this intriguing teaser: it comes from the Slavic word for “water sprite,” a rare, mythical creature that resides in lakes and rivers.

With all the water we’re experiencing right now on the Central Coast, doesn’t it make sense to cozy up to the arts with a sweetheart or pal? Stay dry and catch the showing at 9:55 a.m. Feb. 25. Bring your imagination and prepare to be transported!
