Ride the History Rails and Benefit the SLO Railroad Museum
Families and visitors will hear firsthand the bells and whistles of railroad history during the Pacific Coast Railroad Roundup 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 30th, at Santa Margarita Ranch Pacific Coast Railroad in Santa Margarita. This annual community event thrills attendees while benefiting the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum.
Visitors can celebrate SLO County's railroad heritage with train rides on former Disneyland passenger coaches pulled by an 1896 Porter steam locomotive. Speeder rides will also be available for kids of all ages. Railroad exhibits, operating model train layouts and souvenirs will be available. Several historic buildings at the Ranch will also be on display. Guest engines and railroad vendors have been invited to be on hand that day. A BBQ will be offered as will beverages from Central Coast Brewing and Ancient Peaks Winery.
Proceeds from the Railroad Roundup will benefit the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum's efforts to refurbish its museum building in San Luis Obispo's historic railroad district. Museum members have been working for over a decade with SLO City employees to refurbish the new museum home in the historic Southern Pacific freight house which is just south of SLO's Amtrak Station. Plans are being made for the museum to be open on a regular schedule by the middle of 2012. The interior of the Museum is nearing completion and will open for a "sneak preview" for the first time for numerous activities during the Central Coast Railroad Festival on October 6-10, 2011.
