Ride the Sand at the Oceano Dunes Using these Do's and Don'ts

By Kylee Jepsen

Riding the Oceano Dunes soon? Follow these great tips to help you make the most of your off-road vehicle experience in San Luis Obispo County:

DO make your reservations early: Many of the Pismo and Oceano off-roading vehicle rental companies prefer that you make your reservation ahead of time. This will ensure you have the best experience with your preferred vehicle.

DON’T just pick whatever off-roading vehicle looks the coolest. Be sure to do your research. Off-roading vehicles come in various shapes and sizes, from the dune buggy, to the RZR, to the ATV. Talk to the company hosting your dune ride. They can provide tips and insider information on what is safe for a beginner, all the way up to an advanced rider.

DO wear the appropriate attire.

DON’T come dressed for a day at the beach.

Appropriate attire for dune buggying would include close-toed shoes (preferably something that covers your whole foot) and a jacket or heavy sweater. If you are going to ride the dunes in the morning, be aware it might be cold outside! Wear pants that are easy to move in, especially if you rent a dune buggy. You will be climbing in and out of the buggy and tight pants will make it much more difficult. Ladies, don’t worry about doing your hair, your head will be covered with a helmet and goggles!

DO wear your goggles and protective gear.

DON’T miss out on the scenery. The Oceano Dunes at Pismo State Beach are absolutely gorgeous. Many travelers don’t know what to expect when going out for the first time. The vastness of these sand dunes will make you relatively speechless and in complete awe of this natural beauty. Stop and take in the view, you won’t regret it!

DO obey the rules and be safe.

DON’T be afraid! Dune Buggying was one of the best outdoor activities I have experienced to date. It was a little scary at first, but once you go over that initial hill your adrenaline starts to rush and you are ready for more! I would highly recommend renting a Dune Buggy for first timers and beginner riders. This small off-roading vehicle is the perfect way to get familiar with the dunes. You will be surprised at the capability it has to tackle some of those steep dunes. Don’t worry, if you get stuck, there are always professional riders out there to help you. I had the wonderful opportunity to ride with Sun Buggy Fun Rentals and they did a great job bringing out staff to assist if we got caught in a “sandy” situation. They also provide a phone number for you to call if you get stuck on a dune and they will be there within minutes.
