SUNSET - Savor the Central Coast

California's Central Coast Wines

At the exciting new food and wine celebration "SUNSET - Savor the Central Coast" - September 30-October 3, 2010 - participants will have the opportunity meet and get a harvest update from the winemakers of 100 wineries from San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Monterey and Ventura counties and experience as many as 500 wines, including 30 finalists and winners of the 2010 Western Wine Awards.  The unique terroir-driven wine event, representing the wine grapes and winemaking talents of 18 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), will provide participants the rare occasion to taste wines side-by-side by varietal, by region and by blend type.  Forty-one varietals from Albarino to Zinfandel will be available for tasting, plus Bordeaux, Rhone and field blends, Kosher wine, ports, late harvest and dessert-style wines.

Sunset Magazine will announce its prestigious 2010 Western Wine Awards at a gala on October 1 at the historic Asistencia at Santa Margarita Ranch, and on October 2-3, seminars and wine tastings will be paired with small plates provided by 35 top local chefs featuring 100 percent sustainable seafood and locally grown produce, lamb, beef, poultry and artisanal cheeses.  One-of-a-kind private harvest winery tours and indulgent winemaker dinners will enhance the SAVOR experience as more than 8,000 participants from throughout California and beyond tour, sip and savor the beauty of California's largely unexplored Central Coast, San Luis Obispo and surrounding communities.

Seminars will showcase everything from barrel-making to the secrets of pairing wine and food.  The Food Network's Tyler Florence will be in the demonstration kitchen to prepare "Dinner at My Place" featuring local seafood and CalPoly raised lamb.  Sunset Wine Editor Sara Schneider will lead several seminars, including a varietal tour of the Distinct and Different Paso Robles appellation and a hands-on blending seminar with the winemakers of Edna Valley.

"When we print stories in Sunset about a great destination, novel ways to cook fresh produce, a cool new wine bar, we are excited about the information we are sharing," said Sunset's Editor-in-Chief Katie Tamony.  "But it's a step short of sharing the experience.  ‘SAVOR the Central Coast' will close the gap.  This region is a treasure trove of exciting new grape varieties, talented winemaking, creative cooking and organic farming, to say nothing of stunning landscapes and coastline.  We want our readers to explore the region with us."
