Bike, Run and Walk events raise funds for local Cancer Support Charities
When Tyler Borges, age 11 years, runs the 5K at the Central Coast Cancer Challenge on Sunday, August 7 at Laguna Lake Park with his mother, brother and friends, it will be a day of fun, celebration and, in a small way, triumph over his on-going fight against cancer. Team Tyler, along with other teams and hundreds of individuals who participate in the Challenge are raising funds for local cancer support charities Jack's Helping Hand and the Cancer WellFit program. Most have been touched by cancer and it is their way of honoring a loved one.
Last year, nearly 500 registered athletes, many of them cancer survivors, participated in the 5K, 10K and Children's 1-Mile runs and the 100K and 50K cycling events that raised $12,000, strictly through registration fees. The event hopes to gain participants this year and increase it's giving. Participants can register by going to the Central Coast Cancer Challenge Website and clicking REGISTER. Each participant receives a Technical T-shirt (Kid's receive a cotton T-shirt), a FREE Hot Dog, Jamba Juice and/or a beer (21 and older only). Online registration closes on Thursday, August 4 at 9 p.m.
Late registration and Packet Pick-up takes place on Friday, August 5 at Sunset Honda (12250 Los Osos Valley Rd.) from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is also the location of the event's Kick-off Party and Silent Auction. Athletes and their guest are invited to the party with free food, a live band and entertainment from Magician Rich Ferguson.
There will also be Late Registration the Day-of the event. Participant MUST register one-hour prior to their event. ONLY cash and check payments will be accepted. A t-shirt will not be guaranteed.
"We give our participants a bit of a challenge with all of our events," says Heather Hellman, Event Director. "But they all realize that a bit of soreness the next day is a piece of cake to what cancer patients and survivors endure. The whole event is about participation and support for those people and their families who have experienced a cancer diagnosis."
A new event this year is the 22K Family Fun Ride sponsored by Food 4 Less. The shorter distance was added to give the beginner cyclist an easier, flat course to ride. Also new is the partnering with Monarch Dunes to promote "The Gilbert" golf tournament, a shotgun start, 18-holes with proceeds to benefit Jack's Helping Hand and the Gilbert Family for the on-going treatment that Jake Gilbert, a 2 ½ year old, still receives. The Gilbert was held for the first time in October of 2010. It was a fundraiser for Josh and Jennie Gilbert and their then
1 ½ year old son Jake who is battling cancer. The Gilbert tournament cost $150 for 18 holes and dinner, $60 for just dinner (bring your family and friends) and $150 to be a Tee Sign sponsor. Please contact Patrick McGlynn at (805) 343-1010 for more information or to sign-up.
In addition to the six sporting events, participants get to enjoy the Wellness Expo that features local businesses and nonprofits that help promote a healthy lifestyle and offer support to the cancer patient. New this year are short seminars on cancer counseling, healthy cooking demonstrations with Chef Nancy Walker of The Wellness Kitchen and adult and children's yoga classes with Kiyoko Williams of The Yoga Centre. The Wellness Expo is FREE and open to the general public.
The event's Grande Finale will feature a ceremony honoring cancer survivors and remembering those who lost their battle. Afterward, the celebration concert with popular local band The JD Project kicks-off at noon. The concert is FREE and open to the general public. There will be several food vendors available, selling everything from Asian infused food to Kettle Corn. A beer and wine garden will be open for adults 21 years and older with I.D. required.
