Three Days by RV in San Luis Obispo County

Anytime is the right time to plan an RV camping trip to California's San Luis Obispo County. Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this sunny Central Coast county offers RV travelers a wide variety of experiences. Here's a three-day RV camping itinerary that features the best of San Luis Obispo County.

Day One: Welcome to Wine Country!

Start your RV journey through San Luis Obispo County in Paso Robles, a charming 'North County' town in the heart of wine country. More than one hundred wineries and vineyards within an easy drive of Paso Robles make this stop an essential one for the RV traveler who appreciates excellent wines.

Plan a stay at Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles, convenient to all the area's wineries. Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance offers an excellent guide to member vineyards and wineries, as well as suggestions for extending your stay. You can map your own tour of the region's vineyards or take advantage of the Alliance's links to tour companies that specialize in Paso Robles Wine Country. Also take time to explore the charming downtown shops and restaurants of Paso Robles, and don't miss the chance to visit nearby San Simeon, home to Hearst Castle.

Day Two: Come Play on Morro Bay!

On your second day in San Luis Obispo County, travel south on US-101 to Atascadero and then west on CA-41 to the historic fishing village of Morro Bay. The turquoise waters, quiet estuaries and rocky shores of Morro Bay invite active RV campers to kayak, fish, hike and surf. For vacation photos you'll long treasure, take a boat tour to Morro Rock State Preserve, Another way RV travelers can fully experience Morro Bay and the Central Coast is on the area's many trails leading to natural wonders like Black Hill.

You'll also find plenty of less strenuous activity in Morro Bay. The quaint streets of this village boast an impressive number of art galleries, museums and boutiques and golfers will find first-rate golfing at an affordable price at Morro Bay Golf Course. The Museum of Natural History at Morro Bay State Park is a must-see, and as you're enjoying the State Park's beach and trails, you can camp at the on-site campground.

Day Three: A Day at the Beach

On your third day RV camping in San Luis Obispo County, head southeast on scenic CA-1 to San Luis Obispo, and then back on US-101 to the shore. Your South County adventure begins at Pismo Beach, a seaside town that offers not only the beach but a charming, laid-back atmosphere. At Pismo State Beach, you'll find wide open beaches for swimming, kite surfing and soaking up the sun, as well a fishing pier and two nearby campgrounds.

If you're into Off Highway Vehicles, the place to park your RV is Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. This magnificent stretch of beach is the only one in California where your OHV is welcome to run the sands. Enjoy the windswept beauty of the surrounding dunes at this beautiful spot south of Pismo Beach before continuing your tour of other South County beaches.

One more stop we suggest for RV travelers is Avila Beach, where you're sure to find a place to swim, hike, bike or simply enjoy the seaside village ambience. Two scenic beaches, Avila Beach Pier and stunningly beautiful Port San Luis Harbor will provide a wonderful backdrop for camping on the shore. On the final day of your three day San Luis Obispo County RV itinerary, stop to treasure the sounds, sights and experiences that are unique to the Central Coast.

San Luis Obispo County is waiting to welcome RV campers looking for the best of California. Our three-day itinerary can be the starting point for an RV trip you'll remember for years to come.
