Beginners and experienced players alike will thrive at our sports camps as they experience the basics and rules of play, learn foundational team building (including roles and positions), and hone new and developing skills (through drills, conditioning, and game play). Through all this, students will be mentored by both experienced coaches and high school athletes, who can share the valuable experience of what it’s like to play on a high school team with our middle schoolers. On a typical day, students will warm up, participate in drills, receive coaching on specific plays and finally play small team scrimmages and skills competitions. At the end of camp, there will also be a small awards celebration. Gym location to be determined.
Students will be led by Coach Bobby Donohue, who first caught the volleyball bug as a youth on the beaches of Santa Monica (the beach volleyball capital of the world!). He has since gained seventeen years of playing experience—including ten years of competitive play at the collegiate level and in the California Beach Volleyball Association. In addition to playing experience, his coaching accolades include being an assistant coach for five years total at both San Diego Mesa College and Cuesta College and coaching High School Boys Volleyball at SLOCA this past season. Coach Bobby’s love for volleyball stems from, as he puts it, the “fast-paced chess match requiring quick thinking and crisp athletic performance.” At the middle and high school level, he looks to focus on fundamental skills and hone the basics of a proper volley and attack. As a student of the game himself, Coach Bobby is adept at helping each athlete become comfortable with the skills and movements required to be an effective player.
