Sourdough in SLO CAL

Sourdough is unique in that a ‘starter’ is made from wild yeast, verses the more commercial yeast found in other kinds of breadmaking. Sourdough bread rises during the fermentation process and is often considered a healthier option for those with gluten and glucose sensitivities. As fermentation often breaks down gluten and sugar.

The final taste of sourdough is determined by the starter, the fermentation time and the temperature where the bread is made. The location and the mild, Mediterranean climate of Grover Beach influences the flavor profile. Additionally, Grover Beach Sourdough’s starter was born from native yeast found on blueberries from the local farmers’ market. This bread is as local as it gets – a true taste of SLO CAL.

History of Grover Beach Sourdough

The Grover Beach Sourdough story is integrally tied to the restaurant across the street, The Spoon Trade. Owners Brooke & Jacob Town come from many years of restaurant experience, both front and back of house respectively. However, when they opened their own spot, they wanted the menu to feature the finest ingredients and to serve up dishes where everything is made onsite.

As the popularity of their homemade bread served at the restaurant grew, Grover Beach Sourdough was born. At first, the location was used to bake bread, biscuits, waffles and desserts for The Spoon Trade. Now, customers like you, can purchase a variety of baked items for their own tables and recipes.

And don’t let the name fool you. Grover Beach Sourdough has expanded beyond bread. They make some can’t miss bagels, coffee cake, pretzels, brioche buns, pudding and more! You’ll also find traditional sourdough as well as a variety or flavors such as rosemary, cheddar and garlic available.

And diners can still find the sourdough that started it all on the menu at The Spoon Trade. Choose from then sourdough mini loaf (baked to order), sliced sourdough grilled with olive oil and garlic, or cheesy bread pudding with Havarti, crème fraiche and rosemary.

Fun Fact: The Spoon Trade was recently featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives! Come in and try their fried bologna sandwich or artisanal chicken and sourdough waffle for yourself. And with a seasonal menu, there’s always something new to excite your taste buds.
