SLO CAL Art Trail

You can explore the trail at your own pace using the interactive map on the SLOCAL website. The trail is designed for flexible travel depending on which stops you want to visit. Because SLO CAL is easy to navigate, most points on the trail are within a short drive of one another. In fact, you can usually travel from one end of the county to the other in about an hour, making it simple to enjoy multiple stops in a single day or spread them out over a relaxed getaway.

Daytime visits are ideal, especially for outdoor art installations, since natural light enhances both viewing and photography. Sensorio is the exception, as it is designed to be experienced at night. For indoor galleries and museums, be sure to check their business hours on their respective websites before visiting.

Yes! Photography is encouraged. Most public art is freely accessible and makes for great photo opportunities. Just be mindful of private property and traffic conditions when snapping pictures. If you’re visiting private galleries, it’s best to ask permission before taking photos, and note that some museums may have restrictions on photography—especially the use of flash.

While the SLO CAL Art Trail is primarily self-guided, there are monthly art events, such as “Art After Dark”, where galleries and businesses open their doors for a walkable art experience. Some museums along the trail may also offer docent-led tours. Please note that Hearst Castle is an exception, as it can only be visited with a purchased ticket for a guided tour.

The cost varies depending on the stops you choose. Many outdoor murals and public art installations are free to enjoy, while some destinations, such as museums, special exhibitions and major attractions like Hearst Castle or Sensorio, require paid admission.
