Hearst Ranch Wines are a timeless marriage of history and innovation, and there’s no better way to explore them than by visiting one of their unique tasting room experiences. Hidden in a breathtaking bay, beside Highway 1 and across from the iconic Hearst Castle, Hearst Ranch Winery's San Simeon tasting room will transport you back in time.
Sebastian’s in San Simeon originally opened in 1852 as a general store, supplying the needs of the early fishermen, miners, and ranchers brought west by California’s gold rush. It was the primary shipping point for whale oil, cheese, butter and other commodities from the Central Coast. In 1878, the building was moved to its present day location. The store is the oldest, continually operated General Store in San Luis Obispo County.
The village flourished, becoming a depot for stage travel with a telegraph line to San Luis Obispo. In 1878, the Bay View Hotel was built; a first-class accommodation that counted Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Calvin Coolidge and many movie stars such as Cary Grant, among the guests.
By 1910, most of the village had faded away but Sebastian's continues to operate today as the home of Hearst Ranch Winery’s coastal tasting room, general store and cafe for visitors to the nearby William R. Hearst Memorial State Beach, and a Post Office for the residents of San Simeon, operated since 1878..
Taste Hearst Ranch Winery's latest wine selections surrounded by history with the rustle of coastal oaks and the gentle crashing of pacific waves to keep you company. From their dog-friendly patio you’ll enjoy views of the ocean, peeks of Hearst Castle on the hill, and the occasional curiosity of the working ranch horses roaming nearby.
