So, plan your trip and follow the itinerary below, but leave room to extend, to take more time and to really be immersed in the region. These activity recommendations are perfect for a couples getaway or those just looking for a reset. Take your time, wander more, and what you find might become the highlight of your visit to San Luis Obispo County.
📍 15950 Cabrillo Highway, San Simeon, CA 93452
To learn more about the maritime history of the area, a visit to Piedras Blancas Light Station is perfect. Located just off of iconic California Highway 1 and preserved for both the natural area, as well as the light station itself, this is a unique stop to add to your itinerary. Advanced tickets are required, and tours are offered year-round.
6 miles, 10 minute drive
📍 442 SLO San Simeon Road, San Simeon, CA 93452
Swirl, sniff and sip next to the rhythmic waves in San Simeon. Hearst Ranch Winery Tasting Room overlooks the San Simeon Pier, William Randolf Hearst Memorial State Beach and the ocean beyond. Reservations are required. In addition to tasting current wine releases, visitors can also enjoy food from Seaside Foods at the tasting room, or from nearby Seaside Deli or Sebastian’s deli cases.
Stay longer and take a hidden hike on San Simeon Point Trail. To access the trailhead, head to the north end of the beach and follow the trail up the bluff.

📍 Highway 1, 7.8 miles north of Elephant Seal Visitor Center (250 San Simeon Avenue, Suite 5A, San Simeon, CA 93452)
The Piedras Blancas elephant seal vista point is a unique opportunity to safely view these unique creatures. This location is also a rookery, meaning this coastal breeding ground allows visitors to see the entire life cycle of the second largest seal in the world. Docents are also often present, ready to provide information and fun facts about the inhabitants of the beach below the boardwalk.
Stay longer and drive north towards Hearst Castle. Keep your eyes peeled for zebras (dependents of Hearst’s private zoo) on the inland side of the highway and breathtaking vista point pullouts on the coastal side.

At Sycamore Mineral Springs, there are three mineral wells (offering distinct mineral content and restorative properties) and four ways to experience the natural mineral springs. From hillside tubs to the waterfall oasis, every option invites you to relax and recharge. Opt for the private, open-air tub for a romantic escape.

Sunbuggy Fun Rentals offers dune buggies, UTVs & ATVs for adventures at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. These vehicles are specifically designed for off-roading on sand dunes and offer renters a fun way to see a portion of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes complex (the largest intact coastal dune ecosystem on Earth).

Beach bonfires are permitted directly on the sand at Pismo State Beach. It’s the perfect spot to bring a picnic and a blanket and watch the sunset while keeping warm by the fire. Relax and reflect on a day full of adventures in SLO CAL.
