Sustainable, wearable art made from upcycled surfboard resin.

Surf Gems is a jewelry and lifestyle brand inspired by sustainability, local surfing culture and the natural landscape of SLO CAL (San Luis Obispo County). While collaborating on producing her own surfboard, creator Abby Ahlgrim was introduced to resin waste. She's been turning trash into treasure ever since.

About Surf Gems

Abby handcrafts wearable art from excess glassing resin – a surfboard production byproduct. The resin drips off the board arranging itself into bright layers on the floor. Once it has dried, it is cut, ground, sanded, polished, drilled and constructed into earrings, necklaces, pins and bolo ties. The results are Surf Gems: vibrant and glass-like accessories that are uniquely SLO CAL!

Surf Gems are the prefect environmentally conscience gift. They are both beautiful and feel-good. And with diverse colors, patterns and ranges, you can find the perfect piece for everyone on your list (including you). Shop the Surf Gems collections at local stores such as Wavelengths and Smoobage, at craft markets and online at surfgems.com.

Sustainably SLO CAL

In SLO CAL, sustainability comes naturally – it's not forced or in your face, instead it is subtle and honest a lot like the people and places that make up this breathtaking destination. It’s the perfect spot for sustainability practices, like those championed at Surf Gems, to thrive.

Shopping local, from makers, is the eco-friendly choice. SLO CAL Crafted celebrates the outstanding quality of SLO CAL’s farmers, crafters and artisans – like Abby. Check out SLO CAL Crafted businesses to learn more about resident makers and the products they create.

Surfing in SLO CAL

Surf Gems are made right here in Morro Bay. A city originally founded as a port and fishing town, and currently home to multiple oyster farms, waterfront restaurants and watersports rentals along the Embarcadero.

Surfing at Morro Rock is one of the most iconic locations to ride a wave in SLO CAL. It’s also the backdrop for the SLO CAL Open at Morro Bay. This is an annual surfing competition hosted by the World Surf League. They also host the yearly SLO CAL Open at Pismo Beach. Learn more about SLO CAL Open events here.
