Libretto (noun): the text of an Opera

The Sound

Tunes are at the center of every evening at Libretto, as Owner Corey Jordan shares, “Music is really a universal language. It’s something that you don’t have to read to feel.” Musical acts from all over the world come to showcase their talent in jazz, blues, classical and opera on the same site as the old Paso Opera House from 1919. And at the center of each performance is Libretto’s 2012 Steinway & Sons Grand Piano, one of only 12 of its kind in the United States. This piano was one of Steinway’s personal Southern California concert fleet and plaid by the top piano players in the world (including Olga KernJohn Williams and more).

Fun Fact: Did you know that virtuosos pianist and composer Ignacy Jan Paderewski lived in Paso Robles? Perhaps the town’s most famous resident, Ignacy held over 2864 acres of almond trees, fruit orchards and Zinfandel grapes. The Paderewski Festival is held annually bringing concerts and recitals to Paso - Libretto is often a venue for the festival.

Between Fish Gaucho and the Cane Tiki Room is the Libretto Jazz Club. Steps away are bustling tasting rooms, restaurants and shops of downtown Paso. As you walk through the front door and descend the stairs it feels like an escape from the everyday. And as you enter the intimate lounge, you’ll see exposed stone and brick walls, leather booths and cocktail tables with museum quality lighting. It’s a feast to your eyes as well as your ears.

Libretto has great instruments, acoustics and musicians, but what truly sets it apart is the audience. Accommodating 62 attendees per show, the seating is set up to encourage audience engagement with performers. The stage is not set apart, but as part of the room – making this venue one of the most distinct listening experiences around.

AMSTRDM Coffee House opened in 2020 as a coffee shop and piano lounge, and maintains live music performances today. AMSTRDM soon gained popularity amongst musicians for the high-quality instrument in an intimate and unique setting. As owners Corey Jordan and Katelyn Smith began outgrowing their coffee shop venue, they were looking for a larger space while maintaining an intimate experience. That space, Libretto, opened in 2021

Come and take in the premier jazz experience on the west coast for yourself. You might catch Jordan, who in addition to being the owner is also a concert pianist and film composer, tickling the ivories at Libretto. Other hosted musical talent spans legends like four-time Grammy award winning musician and composer Yay Yennings and emerging and future award winners like Julien Knowles.
